【Model of the day #02】

Over the past several years, 3D modeling of cities is advancing in many countries. At present, 3D models for 241 cities have been released on the internet.

Singapore is particularly well-known for publicly releasing 3D models,  and it is going ahead with the Virtual Singapore Project with plans to create 3D models of the entire country.

The project aims to solve issues like the simulating the change of transportation networks when buildings are under construction.

For today’s Model of the Day, I would like to focus on some approaches of 3D modeling for cities.

Let’s start with Japan.

3D model: Sabae city shopping street

Sabae city created a 3D model to allow people to utilize it for unifying the design of the street, retail design, redevelopment and more.

Let me import the 3D model into SYMMETRY.

It’s a detailed model, and as such looks very realistic within SYMMETRY.
This model can be used for urban development and disaster prevention simulations.

Let’s see some approaches in other countries.

New York City releases these data to the public, so the data are applied to the research of the shadow of New York City for example.

Let’s import the 3D model into SYMMETRY and do shadow simulations utilizing the Daylight function.

The 3D CAD data is open to the public, but we need an SKP file so I imported the same model uploaded to 3D Warehouse.

3D CAD data for cities like this can be utilized for urban renewal. Particularly in New York City for planning bicycle routes and such.

For urban redevelopment, by using Layers in SketchUp to visualize pre and post construction, we can import the model into SYMMETRY and simulate at 1:1 scale.

In the future, we will be able to streamline risk management and work efficiency improvements within VR.
